[Ivan Wang once asked me to help him get a copy of Alain Resnais' Nuit et Bruillard for the Taipei Film Museum which he had founded. Like the films of Straub/Huillet, Godard, Mizuguchi etc., Nuit et Bruillard was outlawed in Taiwan in the 1970s. We smuggled it into the country via the French Consulate in H.K. as diplomatic mail containing 'educational material' loaned to the university where I was teaching. And Ivan had a copy made, for the Museum. - When the film was screened on campus, the students of the French and German Dept. were shocked. Finally they learned things about the genocide organized by Nazi Germany that nobody had told them. It was a topic that was avoided by the KMT media. Ivan, of course, was a wonderful progressive. He belonged to that group of  KMT members who would say, with a smile, "They trust us."]

[On 3 films by Malcolm Le Grice (1919, Berlin Horse, and Love Story II); on Macbeth by Rosa von Praunheim; on Chimney Piece by Klaus Wiborny; on Kaldalon and Blonde Barbarei  by Dore O.; on Space Cut and Whatever Happened Between the Pictures? by Werner Nekes. -  The article reflects on films seen during the Hamburg Filmschau in 1972. Werner and Dore had invited Weiland to come to Hamburg and stay at their place. He wrote the text soon after his return to Bochum and Eva M.J. Schmid responded to it by writing a card that said, If I would do a film journal, you would be the first one I would ask to collaborate. The text was apparently believed to be too impressionistic to warrant publication in a German daily paper, at the time. It is published in Art in Society for the first time. Dore O. used the part of the text that refers to Blonde Barbarei on a film poster that advertised this film. That section of the  text is also part of the catalogue entry for Blonde Barbarei in the New York Film-makers’ Cooperative online catalogue.]

[In the late 1970s, the Lung Men Gallery was the most vibrant art gallery in Taipei. Weiland tried at the time to organize an exhibition of works by Robert Filliou but the whole project that Filliou was interested in  fell apart when the gallery refused to pay the cost of transport and insurance. Maybe their orientation also was different.  They were very much interested in  the work of somebody like Wunderlich, and less so in Duesseldorf artists more or less associated with Fluxus. Of course, in  Robert Filliou's work, traces of a Surrealist  vision du  monde were very apparent.]

[This text was offered to the WAZ daily newspaper in Essen; it commented on the implicit social and political (anti-regime) criticism that the author deciphered in the works of several artists taking part in the Essen art exhibition sponsored by a major German corporation. The text was pillaged by a WAZ journalist who turned a critical article into an 'innocent' one while making use of the observations of certain aesthetic traits of the works discussed. Apparently, in  the  interest of  the Essen-based German  sponsor,  the Iraqi government, a major customer at the time,  was not to be offended. The WAZ journalist later on wrote the author that he had assumed that Weiland's article was "PR-material." He wrote that it was common practice to pillage such material, quoting long parts of it,  without indicating the source.]

Biographische Notiz

Die erste öffentliche Lesung Andreas Weilands, zusammen mit dem englischen ‚Underground-Poeten’ Mike Horowitz, war in Bochum gegen Ende der 60er Jahre. Etwas später begegnete er Jean-Marie Straub, der eines seiner Gedichte übersetzte und (auf Französisch und Deutsch) in den Cahiers du Cinéma veröffentlichte. Erich Fried nannte 1981 seine Arbeiten die wichtigsten, ob nun veröffentlicht oder nicht, die ihm in Deutschland in den letzten Jahren unter die Augen gekommen seien.  Für Nicolas Born war er „der geborene Lyriker“.  Jürgen Theobaldy publizierte ihn bereits früh in seiner Zeitschrift BENZIN und später in einer Anthologie mit dem Titel „Und ich bewege mich doch....“ 
Nachdem er einige Jahre englische und deutsche Literatur in Taiwan unterrichtet hatte, kehrte Weiland nach Europa zurück und fuhr fort, über Film, die Kunst, Politik und Stadtplanungsgeschichte zu schreiben. Er publizierte Gedichte in Zeitschriften (wie dem KONKURSBUCH und der kultuRRevolution) und Ausstellungskatalogen sowie bei Kleinverlagen einige Gedichtbände. 
Auszüge seiner filmkritischen Essais zu Arbeiten von  Dore O. und Massimo Bacigalupo wurden im Internet veröffentlicht von Canyon Cinema Inc., San Francisco und der New York Film-Makers’ Cooperative. 
Er übersetzte Gedichte von Robert Creeley, Barbara Guest, Cid Corman, Volker Braun, D.E. Sattler, Pavel Jansky, Seferis, Elytis, Empeirikos und ist Mitübersetzer, zusammen mit Fang Weigui, des Bandes „Den Kranich fragen“ (150 Gedichte von P’o Ch’ü-yi).
