Five Stages
1
Golden texture
Lime-colored, ochre almost –
Inset into,
and rising, swelling in
the calmest ocean surface
of hand-made paper
dark as dark can be…
I stand before you now
thinking of Eastern dreams
of meditation in a pavillon
where lotus flowers drift at night
upon a moon-lit pond
The emptiness discovered
is so rich
so manifold the variations that
I cannot
stop to marvel,
let the eyes
wander so slowly
through the scripture’s text
The golden texture
vanishes and glows
And fleeing, it returns
from times
and distances
I have not known before
2
But soft like velvet
rich and warm like coal
the other page alludes
to longings long forgotten
and yet not lost
to give myself
to that embrace so dark
so comforting
and still
so mute
so quiet
a presence only
that exists as such
You do no ask
what for
You breathe it –
this black warmth
3
But greyer yet
another page is turned:
Is seen!
A moon-lit landscape –
glistening alpine rocks
BELOW THE DISTANT
CAMERA ABOVE
that is a thousand miles away
and yet so close.
I sway, change my position, see
the light’s effect changing, as well.
So still, it hangs there –
Anthracite work!
Worked on patiently.
Glanced at; taken in –
patiently.
Coming to life
in the light…
Yes, it’s darkness,
coming to life
in the light…

Satin black
isn’t satanic black
It is a mellow black
It is a caressing black
Comforting black, it is.
It is black:
A satin black
5
At the end of the day
we always marvel
Is life that way?
Is it over when it is over?
The four pages crossed
by my wandering look
are over.
A white empty space follows –
A jump.
And then, a rectangle
very nearly so –
the
delineation of it:
almost straight.
The material: lead.
Glistening, grey
lead.
Cold,
like a frozen pond.
Shiny, like tree silhouettes
on a wintry morning
emerging from the morning mist.
I see landscapes
where no
landscapes are.
I see bushes, trees…
I see a hilly, rolling land; a vale…
I see mountains in the distance,
I see clouds.
Layers of fog.
I see the immense
infinity of the world
and the sky.
I say bye, bye – sky…
Darkness is settling on the landscape,
an edge of the world
is left aglow now –
as I look at it,
as I turn and move…
as my eyes try to tell me
what they see…
They see
lead
grey lead
under the changing conditions of
today’s light.
Anne-Marie Klenes,
Papier et plomb
36 x 28.5 x ( x 5)
(papiers avec graphite et cire et une plaque de plomb)
Starting to 'read' the dark, blackish
'sequence' from the left...
... and continuing... letting the
eyes swerve to the right, making a 'jump' in order to reach
...the fifth 'part' of this series,
made of glistening lead, I wonder how different 'black' can be...

Goldene Textur
Lehmfarben; ocker, fast –
Eingefuegt in,
und sich erhebend schwellend in
der ruhigsten Meeres-Oberflaeche
handgeschoepften Papiers
so dunkel wie dunkel sein kann…
Ich steh jetzt vor dir
denke an OestlicheTraeume
von Meditation in einem
Pavillon
wo Lotusblumen naechtens treiben
auf mondbeschienenem Teich
Die Leere die ich hier entdecke
ist so reich
so mannigfach die Spielarten davon
dass
ich staune, endlos –
meine Augen wandern lasse
so langsam
durch den Text der heil'jen Schrift
Die goldene Textur
versinkt und glueht
Und fliehend kehrt sie dann zurueck
aus Zeiten –
Fernen –
nie zuvor gekannt
2
Doch sanft wie Samt
wie Kohle reich und warm
spielt eine andere Seite
auf Sehnsucht an, die lange schon vergessen
und doch verloren nie
mich selbst zu geben
jener Umarmung, dunkel
und troestend auch
und doch
so stumm
so still
ein Dasein nur
gegeben als solches
Fragst nicht
wofuer
Du atmest sie –
die schwarze Waerme
3
Doch grauer noch
wird eine andere Seite aufgeblaettert:
Wird gesehn !
Vom Mond erhellte Landschaft –
glaenzend alpine Felsen
UNTER DER FERNEN
KAMERA DORT OBEN
die tausend Meilen weit entfernt
und doch so nah.
Ich schwanke nun,
veraend're meine Position, & seh
die Wirkung des Lichts
sich auch veraendern.
So still, so haengt es dort –
anthrazitenes Werk!
So geduldig
bearbeitet.
Betrachtet; wahrgenommen –
geduldig.
Es wird lebendig
im Licht…
Ja, es ist Dunkelheit.
Wird lebendig
im Licht…

Das Schwarz von Satin
ist nicht satanisches Schwarz
Es ist ein sanftes Schwarz
Es ist ein liebkosendes Schwarz
Troestendes Schwarz ist's.
Es ist schwarz:
Ein Satinschwarz
5
Wenn alles vorbei ist
wundern wir uns immer:
Ist das Leben so?
Ist es vorbei wenn es vorbei ist?
Die vier Seiten durchquert
von meinem wandernden Blick
sind vorbei.
Ein weisser leerer Raum folgt –
Ein Sprung.
Und dann, ein Rechteck
oder doch beinah –
Seine
Begrenzung:
fast gerade.
Sein Material: Blei.
Glaenzendes, graues
Blei.
Kalt,
was sie sehen…
Sie sehen
Blei
graues Blei
unter den wechselnden Bedingungen
des Lichts, heute.
