"Frieze": A Lithographic Work by Els Patoor

This work that Els Patoor called "Frieze" consists of ten lithographies placed next to each other in horizontal fashion and in a sequence pre-determined by the artist. The size is considerable: Each of the ten lithos has a length of 1.10 meters, resulting in an overall length of 11 meters. The height of the work is 50 centimeters.*

Frieze (this is part of the "frieze" or "ensemble" of 10 lithographies lined up in a row; each litho is 110 x 0.50 cm)

Here we see a "detail" or section of this large lithographic work. In order to understand it, we would have to look at the entirety of the work which, having to rely on a digital reproduction or on a number of photographes placed side by side, will yield only a very insufficient impression.

I will instead look at four consecutive parts which we should imagine as being lined up, the first on the left, the fourth on the right, the second and third in the middle.

Note:

* "Diese Arbeit 'Fries' ist eine Serie von 10 Lithographien (10 x 1,10m x 0,50m) die eigentlich ein Ganzes formen."
[This work entitled 'Fries' is a series of 10 lithographies (10 times 1.10 meters times 0.50 meters) which form an organic whole.]
