Gary Maahs, UTE HARING'S PRESSESCHAU SERIES (Part 2)

          Presseschau 4

'Presseschau 4' appears like a still taken by an embedded frontline journalists in, say, Iraq. Or a similar, past or future, war.
The larger part of the print, in black and white (in fact, in light and dark greys, the darkest ones approaching black), shows the publically accessible part of the picture, the 'truth' we are made to see. A soldier squats in front of a child. A friendly gesture, no doubt, symbolizing his role as a helper, giver of presents, a liberator. The smaller part of the picture, in light and dark browns, shows his mother and a brother, a sister, turning away as if they do not want to have anything to do with what's going on there. It is the part of the picture that is usually cut. Omitted from the news. Omitted from what we are allowed to see.
