Former Algerian revolutionary leader Ahmed Ben Bella was pleading
for a peaceful solution of the conflict between the military dictatorship
in Algeria and the FIS (Islamic Salvation Front) during a meeting organized
by progressive Italian members of the Catholic church in Rome.
The meeting was attended by members of secular democratic parties,
including the Algerian left and by delegates of the outlawed
conservative FIS -
ALL OF THEM IN OPPOSITION TO THE PRESENT DICTATORSHIP.
The solution, Ben Bella declared, were democratic elections respected
by all political forces in Algeria.
As long as they don't support fascist or other inhumane choices, a
population (or the majority of a population) has the democratic right to
err, and to "make its own mistakes"...
